St. Thomas Old Church Punnathura was established in the year 1625. The church is located on the banks of the Meenachil River in the scenic village of Punnathura, just outside a small hill. The parish community is spread over an area of 9 km on three banks namely Punnathura, Kidangoor and Kongandoor. This church is one of the oldest churches in the Archdiocese of Kottayam. The church is commonly called as "Punnathura pazhaya palli" or "Punnathura old church" A new church was constructed in January 1960. The current parish has 675 families and 23 koodarayogams. Also, 18 priests and 61 sisters belong to belongs to the community of Punnathura parish. The parish also runs various institutions like schools and boarding facility. The church is also famous for its traditional Knanaya song "Ambinode Bava Thante".
Our most beloved Fr James Cheruvil is the 50th vicar of the St. Thomas Old Church Punnathura. Fr James Cheruvil is serving the community of Punnathura since May 2022.
St. Thomas Girls High School was established in year 1952. The school has over 200 students and 14 teaching/non-teaching staffs. The school is located within the premises of the St.Thomas Old Church Punnathura.

വിശുദ്ധ തോമ്മാ ശ്ലീഹായുടെ നാമത്തിലുള്ള പുന്നത്തുറ പഴയപള്ളി 1625-ല്‍ സ്ഥാപിതമായി. മീനച്ചിലാറിന്റെ തീരത്ത്‌ പ്രകൃതി രമണീയമായ പുന്നത്തുറ എന്ന ഗ്രാമത്തില്‍ ഒരു കൊച്ചുകുന്നും പുറത്ത്‌ ഈ പള്ളി സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നു. ഇവിടുത്തെ ഇടവക സമൂഹം 9 കി.മീറ്റര്‍ ചുറ്റളവില്‍ പുന്നത്തുറ, കിടങ്ങൂര്‍ , കൊങ്ങാണ്ടൂര്‍ എന്നീ മൂന്നു കരകളിലായി വ്യാപിച്ചു കിടക്കുന്നു. കോട്ടയം അതിരൂപതയിലെ പുരാതന പള്ളികളില്‍ പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട ഒന്നാണ്‌ ഈ പള്ളി. അന്ന്‌ ഈ പള്ളിക്ക്‌ അയല്‍പള്ളികളായി ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നത്‌ അതിരമ്പുഴ, കുറവിലങ്ങാട്‌, പുതുപ്പള്ളി, ചേര്‍പ്പുങ്കല്‍ എന്നിവയായിരുന്നു. പള്ളിയുടെ സ്ഥാപനത്തെ സംബന്ധിച്ച്‌ പല അഭിപ്രായങ്ങള്‍ ഉണ്ടെങ്കിലും പള്ളിക്ക്‌ ഔദ്യോഗികമായ ആരംഭം കുറിച്ചത്‌ 1632 ഡിസംബര്‍ 21-ന്‌ ആണ്‌. കുമ്മനത്ത്‌ ബഹുമാനപ്പെട്ട ഇട്ടുപ്പച്ചനും, പള്ളിക്കുന്നേല്‍ , കുന്നപ്പള്ളി, പൊക്കുടി, വാലുമ്മേല്‍ എന്നി കുടുംബക്കാരുമാണ്‌ പുന്നത്തുറ പള്ളിയുടെ സ്ഥാപനത്തിന്‌ നേതൃത്വം നല്‍കിയത്‌.
കൊടുങ്ങല്ലൂര്‍ രൂപതയുടെ മെത്രാന്‍ എസ്‌തപ്പാനോസ്‌ ബ്രിത്തോയാണ്‌ പള്ളി പണിയുന്നതിനുള്ള കല്‌പന നല്‍കിയത്‌. അരീപ്പറമ്പ്‌ ദേവസ്വം വകയും തെക്കുംകൂര്‍ രാജാവിന്റെ അധികാരത്തില്‍പ്പെട്ടതും കൊങ്ങാട്ട്‌ യജമാന്മാരുടെ സ്വന്തം വകയുമായിരുന്ന സ്ഥലത്താണ്‌ പള്ളി സ്ഥാപിച്ചത്‌. അന്നത്തെ യജമാനന്മാര്‍ നസ്രാണികള്‍ക്ക്‌ പള്ളി പണിയുന്നതിനും കര്‍മ്മാദികള്‍ നടത്തുന്നതിനും വളരെ സന്തോഷത്തോടെ സ്ഥലം വിട്ടുകൊടു ക്കയും പല ഉപകാരങ്ങള്‍ ചെയ്യുകയും ചെയ്‌തിരുന്നു എന്ന കാര്യവും പ്രത്യേകം അനുസ്‌മരിക്കേണ്ടതാണ്‌.
തെക്കുംഭാഗരും വടക്കുഭാഗരും ഒരു ഇടവകക്കാരായി കഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്ന പുന്നത്തുറ ഇടവക 1898-ല്‍ രണ്ടായി വിഭജിച്ചു. ഉടമ്പടിപ്രകാരം വലിയ പള്ളിയും വസ്‌തുവകകളില്‍ നേര്‍പകുതിയും തെക്കുംഭാഗര്‍ക്കും ചെറിയ പള്ളിയും (ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ വെള്ളാപ്പള്ളിയുടെ സെമിത്തേരിപ്പള്ളി) പള്ളിമേടയും വസ്‌തുവകകളില്‍ പകുതിയും വടക്കുംഭാഗര്‍ക്കും ലഭിച്ചു. പിന്നീട്‌ വടക്കുംഭാഗര്‍ സൗകര്യാര്‍ത്ഥം ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ വെള്ളാപ്പള്ളി സ്ഥലത്തേക്ക്‌ പള്ളി മാറ്റി സ്ഥാപിച്ചു. ഈ കാലഘട്ടത്തില്‍തന്നെ പള്ളിമുറിയും ചുറ്റുമുള്ള സ്ഥലങ്ങളും വടക്കുംഭാഗരില്‍ നിന്നും തെക്കുംഭാഗര്‍ വിലക്ക്‌ വാങ്ങിക്കുകയും ചെയ്‌തു.
പുന്നത്തുറ പഴയ പള്ളിയുടെ ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ പള്ളിക്ക്‌ അഭിവന്ദ്യ തോമസ്‌ തറയില്‍ പിതാവ്‌ 1951 ഡിസംബര്‍ 21-ന്‌ ശിലാസ്ഥാപനം നടത്തി. 1960 ജനുവരിയില്‍ അഭിവന്ദ്യ മാര്‍ തോമസ്‌ തറയില്‍ പിതാവ്‌ പള്ളിയുടെ വെഞ്ചരിപ്പ്‌ കര്‍മ്മം നിര്‍വഹിച്ചു. വിസിറ്റേഷന്‍ കന്യകാസമൂഹത്തിന്റെ ഒരു ശാഖയും സെന്റ്‌ തോമസ്‌ ഗേള്‍സ്‌ ഹൈസ്‌കൂളും സെന്റ്‌ തോമസ്‌ എല്‍.പി.സ്‌കൂളും കൊങ്ങാണ്ടൂര്‍ സെന്റ്‌ ജോസഫ്‌സ്‌ എല്‍ .പി. സ്‌കൂളും, സെന്റ്‌ മേരീസ്‌ നേഴ്‌സറി സ്‌കൂളും, സെന്റ്‌ മേരീസ്‌ ബോര്‍ഡിംഗും മാര്‍ മാക്കില്‍ ബാലികാഭവനവും ഈ ഇടവകയില്‍ പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കുന്നു. എല്ലാ വര്‍ഷവും ജനുവരിമാസം 1-ാം തീയതി ആഘോഷിക്കുന്ന ഉണ്ണിമിശിഹായുടെ ഛേദനാചാര ത്തിരുനാളാണ്‌ ദേവാലയത്തിന്റെ വലിയ തിരുനാള്‍. ജൂലൈ 3-ാം തീയതി പ്രധാനതിരുനാളും, 2-ാം തീയതി 12 മണി ആരാധനയും നടത്തുന്നു. നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകള്‍ പഴക്കമുള്ളതാണ്‌ ഇവിടുത്തെ കല്‍ക്കുരിശ്‌. ഇന്ന്‌ ഈ ഇടവകയില്‍ 675 കുടുംബങ്ങളും 23 കൂടാരയോഗ വാര്‍ഡുകളും ഉണ്ട്‌.കൂടാതെ 18 വൈദികർ,61 സിസ്റ്റേഴ്സ്, 4 ബ്രദേഴ്സ് എന്നിവർ ആഗോള ക്രൈസ്തവ സഭയ്ക്ക് നൽകിയ പുന്നത്തുറ പഴയ പള്ളിയുടെ സംഭാവനകളാണ്. ഇടവകയിൽ 49 മത്തെ വികാരിയായി ഫാ.സജി പുത്തൻപുരയ്ക്കൽ സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിക്കുന്നു.
Punnathura Old Church was established in the year 1625 in the name of St. Thomas the Apostle. The church is located on the banks of the Meenachil River in the scenic village of Punnathura, just outside a small hill. The parish community is spread over an area of 9 km on three banks namely Punnathura, Kidangoor and Kongandoor. This church is one of the oldest churches in the Archdiocese of Kottayam.
The official inauguration of the church took place on December 21, 1632. The establishment of the Punnathura Church was led by the venerable Ittuppachan of Kummanath and the families of Pallikkunnel, Kunnappally, Pokkudi and Valummel.
Punnathura Parish was divided into two in 1898, with the South and the North being one parish. According to the agreement, the big church and half of the property went to the south and the small church (now the cemetery of Vellapalli) to the church and half to the north. Later, the church was shifted to the present Vellapalli site for the convenience of Vadakkumbhagar.
His Excellency Fr.Thomas Tharayil, laid the foundation stone of the present church of at Punnathura on December 21, 1951.
In January 1960, His Beatitude Fr.Father Thomas officially inaugurated the church.
